Jacob Markstrom's cryptic comments fuel trade rumors. Could the Flames' goalie be headed to the New Jersey Devils?

The Calgary Flames’ goaltending situation is once again the talk of the NHL rumor mill. After a disappointing season that saw the team miss the playoffs, all eyes are on veteran netminder Jacob Markstrom and his uncertain future in Calgary.

Recent comments by Markstrom have only added fuel to the speculation. When asked about his future with the Flames, the 34-year-old was non-committal, stating he didn’t know where he’d be playing next season. His answer leaves the door wide open for a potential trade.

Is Jacob Markstrom’s Time in Calgary Coming to an End?

Markstrom’s contract presents some complications. He has two years remaining on his deal with a full no-movement clause, giving him significant control over his destination. However, Flames insider Eric Francis believes a move is imminent and that Markstrom will be suiting up for a different team come puck drop next season.

The New Jersey Devils continue to be the most likely landing spot for the Swedish goaltender. The Devils have a clear need in net and possess the assets to tempt the Flames. It’s also believed that Markstrom would waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a move to New Jersey.

While nothing is certain in the unpredictable world of the NHL, the signs are pointing towards a summer shakeup in Calgary that would see Jacob Markstrom start the next chapter of his career elsewhere.

  1. I understand that Craig Conroy had to put Markstrom name out to see if there was a good trade. I guess the G.M.’s of the league can’t keep a secret. Now with the further wave of rumors I can see why Markstrom wants to be traded. Personally were going to be sorry to loose him no matter what we get in trade.
